Happy 4th of July weekend!

We’re celebrating in a low-key way with young ones who struggle with shifting bedtime (you can catch us sitting on our lawn seeing about ΒΌ of the Summerville show over the trees in our neighborhood while the kids snooze). But for those of you with older kids there are so many fun ways to see fireworks and take advantage of the day! This article shows all the places to catch fireworks in the greater Charleston area and our event section lines up all you need to know for the Fireworks and Freedom Festival right here in Summerville.

A couple of other notes worth mentioning to you all:

  • Sign up for fall sports through the town is now active and the deadline is July 22nd! Offerings include cheerleading, coach pitch, tee ball, soccer, flag football, pickleball, and ultimate frisbee.

  • Last week we wrote a raving article about Puma’s Italian Ice and Hot Dog Shack but forgot to mention an important detailβ€” now through the end of 2026 mention Palmetto Parents and you’ll get 10% off your order!

If you need a mental health provider who is both highly qualified and able to see new patients quickly, look no further than Huckleberry Health, a local practice run by local parents who truly understand. New clients are typically seen within two business days, and every new patient gets a 15-minute consultation before committing, so you know it's the right fit from the start. They're currently accepting parents and caregivers, with a pediatric provider joining the team this fall.

You can book your complimentary consult here.

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

The Dream Maker Agent

When families begin searching for a home, it's easy to focus on the number of bedrooms, the kitchen layout, or the size of the backyard. While those features are important, the best family home is one that supports your lifestyle both now and in the years ahead.

Think beyond the house itself. Consider how long the commute is, whether there are nearby parks, libraries, walking trails, and community activities. As children grow, their needs change. A home that works well for a toddler may need different features when that child becomes a teenager.

It's also helpful to think about flexibility. Could an extra room become a home office today and a bedroom later? Is there space for grandparents to visit or stay if needed? Does the neighborhood offer opportunities to build lasting friendships?

Buying a home is one of the biggest investments a family makes, but it's also an investment in everyday life. The right home isn't always the biggest or newestβ€”it's the one that allows your family to create memories, celebrate milestones, and feel comfortable coming home each day.

As a real estate professional, I've learned that the happiest homeowners are often those who looked beyond the listing photos and considered how a home would support their family's future. Finding that balance between today's needs and tomorrow's possibilities is what turns a house into a place where life happens.

After all, the best home isn't just where your family livesβ€”it's where your family's story continues to unfold.

Fireworks & Freedom Festival

For the most part, we've been content having more relaxed Fourth of Julys with young kids, but I have to say that I am really looking forward to taking them all to their first fireworks show one day! My oldest truly just cannot hang when we push him to stay up late, so it's going to wait another year. We love the Fireworks and Freedom Festival and it's definitely something to check out, even if you have younger kids and don't stay all the way to the end for the fireworks. It's a busy event so if that's not your jam, we totally understand. But it's an awesome way to celebrate with the community and the town does all they can to make it a seamless and fun event for everyone!

Before you even get there β€” Tot Time in the morning

If you have a toddler and want something to do on the morning of July 4th while staying cool, Summerville Parks & Rec has you covered. There's a special Tot Time session that morning at the Rollins Edwards Community Center (301 N. Hickory St.) from 9am–1pm. It's indoor open play, just $3, and no pre-registration required. A great way to wear the little ones out before the main event later in the day.

Plan for the Heat

It is going to be hot. July 4th in Summerville is not the time to wing it on that front. Bring umbrellas, handheld fans, and spray bottles to keep everyone comfortable. The town will have a cooling tent on-site as well, which is a great spot to take a break if you need to get out of the sun for a few minutes. What you can't bring: large coolers, tents, grills, personal fireworks of any kind (sparklers, Roman candles, etc.), pets, or alcohol. Pack light and strategic.

Getting There

Plan to take the shuttle. Parking fills up fast and the town has made it easy β€” shuttle buses run from the First Citizens Bank Parking Lot behind Town Hall at 200 S. Main St., picking up and dropping off throughout the evening. Just note that shuttle service ends at 11pm, so make sure you're back on the bus before then.

Also worth knowing: the second half of Gahagan Park will be closed July 2nd through 4th while the fire department sets up the safety perimeter for the fireworks. The entire park will be closed all day on July 4th and will reopen once the event is underway, so don't plan to show up early to grab a spot.

What's There

The kids zone has games, face painting, and inflatables β€” plenty to keep them busy even if you head home before dark. On the food side, this year's vendor lineup is loaded: Don Sazon, Edisto & Co., Deliciously Devoted, Bruster's, KK's Kitchen, This Little Piggy, FedUp, Polar Paradise, Wetzel's Pretzels, Shaka Shrimp, Burgers N Freys, 3K Events & Treats, Cam's Boiled Peanuts, Sno Biz, and Melissa's Honey Puffs. The park concession stand will also be open. In other words, you will not go hungry.

The fireworks show is handled by the fire department and it's always a good one. Whether you make it to the grand finale or call it a night after the inflatables and a snow cone, there's plenty here to make a great Fourth of July memory with your family.

Al’s Burger Shack

Instagram post

If you haven't heard yet, Al's Burger Shack has officially landed in Summerville (and it was worth the wait).

Al's got its start in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where it built a devoted following doing one thing exceptionally well: burgers made with 100% fresh ground chuck, hand-pattied in-house, cooked to order, and served on a buttered, toasted potato roll. Everything on the menu is made fresh, including all the sauces, the chili, and the frosty milkshakes. It's the kind of place that doesn't cut corners, and you can taste it.

Our friends Amanda and Dex were among the first through the door at the new Summerville location and came back raving. They hit the Bobo Chili Cheeseburger (American cheese, mustard, house-made chili, onions, and slaw β€” a legitimate contender for best burger in town), Sean's Bacon Cheeseburger, crinkle cut fries, tater tots, sweet potato fries, all the house-made dipping sauces, and a chocolate handspun milkshake. Their verdict: everything was delicious and they couldn't even get through everything they wanted to try on the first visit.

For families, the kids' menu is simple and solid including a plain cheeseburger, hot dog, grilled cheese, or chicken nuggets, each with a choice of side and a drink, all for $8.95. You can upgrade to a kids' milkshake for a few dollars more. The house-made dipping sauces (AL Sauce, roasted garlic aioli, sriracha aioli, spicy ranch, and more) are free with every side order and are worth sampling across the whole table.

Al's Burger Shack Summerville is at 9500 Dorchester Rd, Suite 188. Open Monday through Sunday, 11am–9pm.

The Little Traditions That Become Big Memories

One thing I've been thinking about as the Fourth of July approaches is how quickly family traditions take shape.

When you're in the middle of parenting little kids, it often feels like you're just trying to survive the dayβ€”packing snacks, finding sunscreen, keeping everyone hydrated, and hoping bedtime isn't too thrown off from fireworks. But somewhere in all of that ordinary chaos, traditions are being built.

Maybe it's watching fireworks together every year. Maybe it's making homemade ice cream, grilling burgers in the backyard, or letting the kids stay up later than usual to enjoy all the festivities. Whatever it is, your children probably won't remember whether everything went exactly as planned. They'll remember how it felt.

One day, they'll look back and say, "Every Fourth of July, we always..."

That thought makes me want to be a little more intentional this weekend. Not about making it perfect, but about making it meaningful.

So whether your plans are big or small, I hope you take a moment to pause and enjoy them. The traditions we're creating today often become the memories our children carry for a lifetime. Our family did a beach day on Lake Michigan every year growing up, and those are some of my most treasured memories.

Happy Fourth of July, and here's to making memories together!

Love,

Courtney, Daniel, and the Berk Boys
