Palmetto Piece: The Superpower We Already Have

In this week’s episode of the Two Dads in Tech podcast, Nir Eyal, bestselling author of Indistractable, tells a story about a quiet afternoon spent with his daughter. They were flipping through a book of games and activities when one question stopped them: "If you could have any superpower, what would it be?"

It’s a question many of us have asked, or been asked, by our kids. But Nir couldn’t remember her answer. Why? Because he had picked up his phone. Just for a second. Just to check something.

He missed the moment. And he remembered the moment he missed.

We talk a lot about screen time and how to manage our kids' access to technology. But as parents, we’re often just as distracted—scrolling, checking, replying, refreshing. Nir calls attention “the skill of the century,” and he’s right. Because the truth is, our attention is a superpower. And it’s one we already have… if we choose to use it.

This week, try keeping your phone in your pocket for just five extra minutes during bedtime stories, dinner, or a backyard adventure. See what you notice. Hear what your kids say. You might be surprised how much magic lives in those little moments—if we’re looking.
