One thing I've been thinking about as the Fourth of July approaches is how quickly family traditions take shape.

When you're in the middle of parenting little kids, it often feels like you're just trying to survive the day—packing snacks, finding sunscreen, keeping everyone hydrated, and hoping bedtime isn't too thrown off from fireworks. But somewhere in all of that ordinary chaos, traditions are being built.

Maybe it's watching fireworks together every year. Maybe it's making homemade ice cream, grilling burgers in the backyard, or letting the kids stay up later than usual to enjoy all the festivities. Whatever it is, your children probably won't remember whether everything went exactly as planned. They'll remember how it felt.

One day, they'll look back and say, "Every Fourth of July, we always..."

That thought makes me want to be a little more intentional this weekend. Not about making it perfect, but about making it meaningful.

So whether your plans are big or small, I hope you take a moment to pause and enjoy them. The traditions we're creating today often become the memories our children carry for a lifetime. Our family did a beach day on Lake Michigan every year growing up, and those are some of my most treasured memories.
