RESTAURANT

Groucho’s Deli

If you’ve lived in the Lowcountry for even a short time, chances are you’ve heard someone say: β€œYou’ve gotta try Groucho’s.”

Groucho's Deli is a Southern sandwich staple that’s been around since 1941, and the Summerville location is one of those easy, reliable spots when the whole family is hungry. The great thing about the Summerville location is how spacious it is. There is a lot of room, and there are a lot of tables. Great for families with children.

Daniel and I used to go to their Clemson location when we were in school. There’s a lot of nostalgia in these walls.

The menu is packed with classic deli sandwiches, salads, and their famous β€œdippers” β€” sandwiches served with a side of their legendary 45 Sauce for dunking. If it’s your first visit, the STP Dipper is the move. It’s a stacked sandwich with turkey, pastrami, and Swiss on soft bread that somehow manages to feel both hearty and simple at the same time.

Kids tend to love the laid-back vibe here. Orders come out quick, the menu is straightforward, and there’s plenty of seating if you’re rolling in with a stroller or a couple hungry toddlers.

A few family favorites to try:

  • STP Dipper (the classic)

  • Turkey & Swiss Sandwich

  • Chicken Salad Plate

  • Chips + that famous 45 Sauce

It’s the kind of place where lunch is easy, the sandwiches are consistent, and everyone leaves happy.

Sometimes the best family meals aren’t fancy, they’re the ones where everyone finds something they love and you’re back home before naptime.

Pro tip: Grab extra 45 Sauce.

PALMETTO PIECE

They Are More Important Than Work

Hey parents β€” Daniel here. πŸ‘‹

Parenting is one of the greatest joys in my life. It’s also one of the hardest things to do well.

Courtney and I have two boys. They’re 4 and almost 2, and it seems like they were both born yesterday. I have no idea how this much time has passed.

Life right now is loud, chaotic, joyful, and a little sleep-deprived.

I’m fortunate to work from home. I work in tech (at beehiiv, the platform that powers this newsletter). I love the work, but working from home with little kids has its moments.

Sometimes that means being on a call with someone important while it sounds like a tiny circus is happening down the hallway.

Last week it meant being in a meeting while my youngest randomly threw up everywhere downstairs (Tuesday mornings, am I right?).

He’s okay… but in the moment I thought he was dying and you’d think I was dying from my reaction.

I get interrupted a lot. I usually love it. I sometimes don’t.

Work matters. It does. But being present with your family matters even more. I know not everyone works from home. So be present with them when you can in the ways you can.

But work will always be there.

Your kids being little will not.

When your child runs up to show you something β€” a whistle, a rock, a drawing, a story β€” stop and share the moment with them.

Match their excitement.

Better yet, exceed it.

Those are the moments that matter most.

β€” Daniel

Love,

Courtney, Daniel, and the Berk Boys
