Happy Labor Day Weekend!

We’re wishing your family a weekend full of connection and relaxation! Fingers crossed that the rain holds off so we can enjoy events going on this weekend and spend some time outdoors. On our Instagram we’ll share more events to look forward to later on in the week so follow us there if you haven’t already!

TO DO

Scavenger Hunt Downtown Summerville

☝🏼 Does your family love a scavenger hunt? Get outside and search for all 24 sculptures in Azalea Park and downtown Summerville! Use this brochure to guide your tour and learn more about each sculpture. And for the first family to find all 24 sculptures, Palmetto Parents will send you a $25 gift card to Talucci’s Bakery. Just send a picture of your family on the hunt to [email protected].

Pro tip: spend some time searching for all the live turtles in the ponds in Azalea park, too! Our family loves to turtle watch there and play at the Discovery Garden in Azalea Park.

Other scavenger hunt options:

  • Find all 23 B.I.R.D.S. (Birds in Residences Downtown Summerville) sculptures! This brochure gives 23 limerick clues to guide you through historic downtown Summerville to find the birds on the B.I.R.D.S. Sculpture Trail. The birds were sculpted by many award winning artists throughout the country and are life-sized native birds.

  • Check out this Downtown Summerville Sneaky Search that takes you to spots like the Flowertown Players Theater and Timrod Library. With six fun stops along a 1.4-mile route, you’ll solve clues, complete challenges, and uncover hidden gems as you go.

LOCAL EVENT

Fun for The Whole Family at Bolts & Brews

Bolts & Brews, Summerville’s beer garden, has a full weekend of family fun lined up, and there truly is something for all ages! Our family loves the laid-back vibe there—it’s the perfect spot to relax, enjoy a drink, and be outside while the kids play. Kick off your weekend Friday night with the Lowcountry Fish Camp food truck from 4:30–7:30pm, or stop by for one of these amazing events over the weekend. Check their Facebook page for any updates for the weekend (especially with the weather being a little dicey).

On Saturday from 2-3pm head to Bolts & Brews for a special storytime for preschool and elementary aged kids. This month’s story is “If You Take A Mouse to School.” Slushies will be available for purchase!

For families with older children, Southern Hatchets Axe Throwing will be on-site from 4-7pm for some outdoor axe throwing! Shawerma House with also be there for some tasty food while you throw.

Make & Much is happening from 2-4pm on Sunday afternoon at Bolts & Brews. Snow cone truck Sno Biz will be there and there will be a station set-up for kids to make their own thumbprint bookmarks (suitable for ages 3 & up).

RESTAURANT

Swig & Swine

When our family is craving barbecue, Swig & Swine is always at the top of the list. It’s become our go-to spot in Summerville—not just because the food is loaded with flavor, but because the experience is quick, easy, and family-friendly. Whether we’re grabbing dinner on a busy weeknight or ordering catering for a larger event, Swig & Swine never disappoints.

One thing that sets them apart is affordability. Barbecue can sometimes be pricey, but Swig & Swine has weekly deals that make it much easier to enjoy without breaking the budget:

  • Mondays – $12 meat and three sides (generous enough to share; meats rotate weekly, so check their Facebook page).

  • Tuesdays – $12 sandwich plates, plus from 4–7pm enjoy $5 single smashburgers or $8 doubles.

  • Wednesdays – 25% off all wings.

And if you’re dining with kids, the menu makes it simple—just $6 for options like a pulled pork sandwich, mac and cheese, chicken fingers, or grilled cheese.

Swig & Swine also does an excellent job with catering, which we’ve used for family gatherings before. Their meats and hearty sides feed a crowd with ease, making it an easy choice for events or celebrations.

All in all, Swig & Swine hits the sweet spot: delicious barbecue, a welcoming atmosphere, kid-friendly meals, and wallet-friendly specials. If you haven’t stopped by yet, this is your sign to go!

PALMETTO PIECE

The Superpower We Already Have

In this week’s episode of the Two Dads in Tech podcast, Nir Eyal, bestselling author of Indistractable, tells a story about a quiet afternoon spent with his daughter. They were flipping through a book of games and activities when one question stopped them: "If you could have any superpower, what would it be?"

It’s a question many of us have asked, or been asked, by our kids. But Nir couldn’t remember her answer. Why? Because he had picked up his phone. Just for a second. Just to check something.

He missed the moment. And he remembered the moment he missed.

We talk a lot about screen time and how to manage our kids' access to technology. But as parents, we’re often just as distracted—scrolling, checking, replying, refreshing. Nir calls attention “the skill of the century,” and he’s right. Because the truth is, our attention is a superpower. And it’s one we already have… if we choose to use it.

This week, try keeping your phone in your pocket for just five extra minutes during bedtime stories, dinner, or a backyard adventure. See what you notice. Hear what your kids say. You might be surprised how much magic lives in those little moments—if we’re looking.
