TO DO

Visit Summerville Museum & Research Center

Did you know Summerville has a rich history — and that there’s a place dedicated to preserving and sharing it with the community? Cue The Summerville Museum and Research Center located in the hub of downtown…”a little museum with big stories”.

At this quaint museum located at 100 East Doty Avenue, families can go and explore many artifacts and displays that showcase how life was in the past for Summerville residents. When you visit you will see examples of many animal and tree varieties from the area, numerous pictures and real tools used by people and businesses in the past, and even an extensive fossil collection with fossils found right here in Dorchester County!

Our family moved to the Lowcountry about two and a half years ago and we had no idea how much history there was in Summerville until the boys and I took a spontaneous trip to the Summerville Museum and Research Center. We asked for a private tour of the museum (highly recommended— there’s no extra charge) and my very curious six year old son got all his questions answered. Our favorite part of the museum was the fossil room…we were so surprised to learn that all the fossils came from our area! We had always assumed the museum wouldn’t be of much interest to our young boys, but to my surprise they really enjoyed it.

Whether you are trying to find something to do with your family on the weekend or are just curious about the lush history of our town, visit the Summerville Museum and Research Center. Along with an enjoyable time, you might even walk away with a greater appreciation for where you live.

  • Hours: Thursday-Sunday 10am-4pm

  • 🎟️ Price: Adults $10, Children (18 & under) are free.

Many people are waiting for rates to drop—but here’s the truth: when they do, competition will heat up fast, choices will shrink, and prices could climb. Right now, buyers have a rare advantage: more inventory, slower price growth, and room to negotiate. That window won’t last once rates fall and demand surges. Don’t wait for the crowd—make your move now while the odds are in your favor.

RESTAURANT

Benny Mazzetto’s Pizza

Last week, we gathered a group of families for a casual night out in Summerville, and when it came to feeding a crowd, there was only one obvious choice: Benny Mazzetto’s. Known for their giant New York–style pizzas, Benny’s makes sharing a meal fun and easy.

We ordered three classics — pepperoni, sliced Italian sausage, and cheese — and the pizzas did not disappoint. The slices are enormous (as in bigger than your plate enormous!), so we requested them double-cut, which made it much easier for the little ones to handle. Pro tip: even with a hungry group, we could have ordered less and still had plenty. It’s not just delicious — it’s also a super affordable option when feeding a crowd.

The staff at Benny’s went above and beyond to make sure our group was comfortable and taken care of, which made the evening even better.

Benny’s is located downtown Summerville right off the square at 111 S. Main Street and is open Sunday-Thursday 11am-10pm and Friday-Saturday 11am-2am (an awesome late night food option).

One of the perfect Summerville evenings? Grab a giant pizza from Benny Mazzetto’s, let the kids run off their energy in Hutchinson Square, and finish the night with a sweet treat from Simple Treasures Ice Cream. Simple, affordable, and full of small-town charm — nights like these are what make Summerville special.

PALMETTO PIECE

Two Things Can Be True

This poem came across my feed recently, and I love the reminder it offers: so much of what feels challenging in the moment is also, in its own way, a privilege.

For example, we’ve had a string of doctor’s visits lately, and the wait times have been long. With a one-year-old, that can feel especially hard — keeping little hands busy (and away from all the germ-covered things) is no small task! But at the same time, I remind myself what a privilege it is to have access to healthcare and same-day sick visits.

What really struck me, though, were the comments from other moms. Many shared a helpful truth: two things can be true at once. You can be grateful, and it can still feel hard. You can recognize your blessings and privileges, and still feel exhausted.

This is a good reminder for me. I tend to want to categorize things as either good or bad, but life — and our feelings — are more layered than that. So I’m learning to hold both truths: practicing gratitude while also acknowledging that some days are tough. Because two things can be true at the same time.

Love,

The Berks 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦
